Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for his use of colour He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter.
ART & DESIGN AT ST THOMAS'
Art enables our pupils to use and develop creativity and imagination. Our pupils will create their own work and learn from other artists. We will enable them to develop their confidence, knowledge and skills as they practise, experiment and invent their own works of art.
The Art curriculum in school is based around the schemes of work from Access Art and our curriculum design allows for the sequential development of subject specific and practical knowledge across the whole school. Our planning is well sequenced to provide a coherent, interesting and engaging subject scheme which enables our children to acquire a broad range of subject specific knowledge and to develop a range of knowledge and skills in techniques such as drawing, painting and sculpture. The projects are well sequenced to provide a coherent subject scheme that develops children’s skills and knowledge of visual elements, art forms, artists and art movements.
Our pupils use a wide range of materials and are be able to use their Art skills within other disciplines such as Science, Computing and Design Technology. We provide all pupils with the skills and knowledge to create pieces of work they can reflect on, refine and be proud of. We encourage children to explore, to research, to observe and to identify how they can refine and improve their work and to recognise and celebrate the progress they have made. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about the work of artists and they will have the opportunity to create art inspired by famous artists, art movements and styles of work.
Our children will have lots of opportunities to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, observe and express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.

Take a look at some of our Art work
Year 3 children practise their paint mixing skills and learn about the primary and secondary colours within the colour wheel.
Year 3 children learn to make prints. They use their skills to create prints relating to their work on fossils and ammonites. They also used this skill in our Special Space Week work.
Our children's art work was shown in a local art gallery. We had a super Science week, and borrowed some Moon rocks from NASA. This inspired all our work for the week! This was then part of a local schools Art Display.
All our children extend their art work and learning in the outdoors. In our own Forest School Curriculum the children hunt and collect leaves and natural items to help develop their understanding of tones and hues.
Year 1 children develop their painting skills and learn how to blend and mix colours whilst developing excellent brush control.
Year 6 children took part in a Beach Art workshop with local artist. The Fylde Ranger Service helped orgnaise this. Working together in and with the local community.
Reception children grow their own flowers from seed. They use these flowers to inspire their artwork, based on the work of the artist: Yvonne Coomber.
We love to learn outdoors and we use our art skills in the outdoors too. Reception children make clay sculptures of mini beasts on their school trip to Park View4U. Reception and Y6 children work together to create sand sculptures on our local beach.
